Most of have heard the term Subway Tile or heard about Subway Tile and must have wondered what is it actually, or where did it get its name. It might have sparked your curiosity, and you have questioned, “well what is so special about it?”

The Subway Tile has inherited its name from a little piece of history back in 1904 when clean white rectangular tiles were used in New York subway stations to cover large expanse of walls and ceilings. These tiles were easy to use, clean, durable, stain resistant and gave a very simplistic yet grand look to the walls and arches of not only the station but also several Government Buildings in New York. The high gloss and light color was particularly fit for the underground stations where no daylight entered and artificial lights were the only light source. They say that these tiles are as hardy and weather proof & hard working as are the people in New York.

In the later years these tiles became very popular inside homes as backsplash for kitchens and bathrooms again because of its simplistic qualities or neat & clean look, ease of maintenance and was also found to be complementing any color or design style inside a kitchen, be it Traditional or Contemporary.

The traditional size of these tiles was 3”x6” and till today that size is being maintained in addition to 1”x3” & 6”x12” that were manufactured later on as well. From these underground boroughs to our modern or traditional homes, the transition has been lovely to give to our homes a quintessential look of timeless elegance. Its hardiness, simplicity, heat resisting power, ease of cleaning has made these tiles very popular. These are made in its ever popular white color as well as other shades or bright yellow, green, red, black and others as well.
